Stevens Group participates in international research consortium “Supervised Morphogenesis in Gastruloids - SUMO”

The Stevens Group will participate in a consortium that secured funding from the European Innovation Council Pathfinder scheme within the “Engineered Living Materials” challenge. “Supervised Morphogenesis in Gastruloids – SUMO” is an interdisciplinary project focused on the development of realistic in vitro organ models (organoids) by building on state-of-the-art gastruloid technology. Gastruloids harbour great promise for both fundamental and applied science for their ability to model organ primordia in the framework of their native three-dimensional context. The Stevens Group will contribute expertise in advanced Raman microspectroscopy of living tissues.
SUMO unites researchers from the University of Oslo, Norway (Stefan Krauss, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences and Jan Helge Solbakk, Institute of Health and Society), the MPI-CBG (Jesse Veenvliet), Imperial College London, UK (Molly Stevens, Faculty of Engineering, Dept of Materials), the University of Glasgow, UK (Nikolaj Gadegaard, James Watt School of Engineering);  the Tel Aviv University, Israel (Iftach Nachman), and the Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut für Molekulare Pharmakologie (FMP), Germany (Jens von Kries).
Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth said, “Congratulations to all projects selected under the first EIC Pathfinder Challenges call. With the support of EIC Programme Managers, they will progress together towards common goals and create new opportunities for radical innovation. With the new mechanisms under the EIC, we have the means to support the whole value chain and to transform these innovative technologies into successful companies in Europe.”
With its Pathfinder programme the EIC supports the exploration of bold ideas for radically new technologies. It welcomes the high-risk / high gain and interdisciplinary cutting-edge science collaborations that underpin technological breakthroughs.
The Stevens Group at Imperial is an Associate Partner funded by UKRI under the UK Government’s Horizon Europe Guarantee.
